The Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel and Spa is a grand country house hotel set in the wonderful Yorkshire Dales. It is owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and has been in their family since 1753. Originally a coaching inn.
The Devonshire Arms has undergone a significant evolution over the centuries. It now offers: highly sophisticated, delux accommodation modern British cuisine, and heavenly pampering in it state-of-the-art spa as Journalist Dawn-Maria discovers for Your Holiday TV.
Place to Stay
Nestled in 30,000 acres of the Bolton Abbey Estate in the beautiful, tranquil Yorkshire countryside, with its nature trails, fishing rivers, charming tearooms and picture postcard villages, is the award winning Devonshire Arms Country House Hotel and Spa. Today the Devonshire Arms exudes a peaceful charm, while providing a traditional and personal approach to guests, with friendly staff who make you feel really welcomed. You are greeted with large fresh flower arrangements throughout the hotel and the interior displays a number of original paintings of country pursuits from the Devonshire collection. All the bedrooms are individually designed and have a luxurious and charming traditional finish. The lounge is decorated with more fine art from the Devonshire collection as well as antiques, and you can melt into the sofa while enjoying the simple beauty of the dancing flames of the delightful open fire.
Taking in the Surroundings
I would recommend a gentle stroll around the Estate to take in Bolton Abbey, with its eye-catching beauty and wealth of history, along with the peacefulness and rugged beauty of the wonderful Yorkshire Dales. Of course a visit to one of the many tea rooms for a cream tea is a must. For those of you who want to buy from local producers, the village shop is an excellent place in which to stock up, choosing from a large variety of local produce, which of course I did. The hotel can also arrange a number of outdoor activities during your stay and guests can hire walking boots to enjoy a nice countryside stroll or, for the keen anglers amongst you, fishing rods and waders are also available for guests to hire.
After enjoying your country pursuits, you will find dining at the Devonshire an elegant affair in the Michelin starred 4AA rosette Burlington Restaurant, with its fine china and silverware, exposed brick, rich textured table cloths and wooden floor. You will find a sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere, with the background chatter of contented diners, while award-winning Head Chef Steve Smith presents a fine dining experience with a menu of modern English and French dishes along with an outstanding selection of wines. The 1500 bin wine list includes a rich variety of rare and vintage wines. To ensure you make the most of your weekend break, Sunday lunch is a must, and you can enjoy the delectable cuisine while taking in the wonderful views of the Yorkshire dales.
Let’s not forget as part of a weekend break a little bit of TLC is a must for the hardworking woman and her partner, so pampering is a welcome treat while staying at the Devonshire Arms. In an ancient barn opposite the hotel can be found the delights of the Health Spa. The Spa offers a luxury range of ESPA products and treatments, and includes three beauty therapy rooms, steam room, sauna, pool and gym and, for the very brave, a cold plunge pool.
I decided to treat myself to the Elemis Face and Body Therapy Cooling Hot Stone Body & Facial. Alison, my therapist customised the Elemis ice-cooling thermal muscle massage to help alleviate stress from my aching and tired muscles. The treatment ensured my mind was free to relax and drift away on a cloud of bliss, while an intensive anti-ageing booster facial was applied to my face, leaving it clear and radiant.
Ladies, let’s not forget that men need TLC as well, and the Spa has a number of treatments for men from facials to detox. My colleague opted for the Urban Cleaning Facial, the treatment helps to eliminate blocked pores, repairing the skin and leaving it clear. My colleague concluded that he really enjoyed the treatment. For an escape to the countryside, The Devonshire Arms ticks all the right boxes. With its charm, well appointed rooms and tasteful interior, it is a haven for relaxation set in a fabulous location.
