Agatha Christie inspiring visitors to Egypt for 40 years

It’s been 40 years this month since Agatha Christie died - an author that has inspired many people to visit Egypt after writing ‘Death on the Nile’ and ‘Death Comes as the End’ there.

The author was fascinated with archaeology and spent 30 years travelling to Egypt soaking up its unique atmosphere and discovering its many ancient sites, many of which provide the backdrop to her fictional plots. Hotels such as the Old Cataract Aswan where Agatha Christie is believed to have written Death on the Nile continue to attract visitors for their old-style colonial charm of a bygone era.

Since the 1930s when Death on the Nile was first published there have been several major discoveries and restoration projects including the Sphinx Avenue in Luxor, the 3,600 remains of forgotten pharaohs King Senebkay in the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Golden Mummie, the giant limestone heads of royal priests and the 18th dynasty kin Amenhotep III and the lost tomb of Queen Nefertiti.

Archaeologists are continually uncovering ancient remains and monuments, burial sites and temples and Egypt continues to fascinate those who travel there with old and new discoveries. For those with an interest in history Egypt is unbeatable as a destination. One of the UK’s leading tour operators to Egypt offers a wide range of classic Nile cruises and tours to take visitors to some of the main sites.

The 14-night ‘Ancient Egypt’ package is the ideal way for seeing as much as you can on one trip and includes a 7-night Nile cruise, with 4-nights in Luxor followed by 3-nights in Cairo. Sites visited include the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the Temples of Luxor, Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan and the Temple of Philae, the Pyramids and the Sphinx.

Visitors will also get the chance to see the Sphinx Avenue in Luxor and newly opened mortuary temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III which is set to become another major attraction in Luxor. The statue of the Egyptian king in Luxor was restored last year 3,200 years after it collapsed following an earthquake. It stands at 2.92 metres tall.

This holiday is currently on sale with up to £200 off the brochure price. The lead in price is from £1,349 per person, based on selected departures between now and June 2016. The price includes flights from Heathrow, transfers in resort, flight between Luxor and Cairo, 7-night full board cruise on the deluxe Royal Viking plus 10 guided excursions, 7-nights bed and breakfast accommodation in Luxor and Cairo.

It’s A Right Royal Affair... William, George, and Prince Rupert?

With the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge touching down for their second Royal tour of Canada today, (22nd September) this is set to be one of the key destinations for 2017.

Celebrating 150 years of confederation next year, there are special events and activities being planned throughout the country. Be a part of the festive atmosphere by joining a Great Rail Journeys escorted tour.

Great Rail Journeys (www.greatrail.com / 0800 240 4470 / 01904 527 180) have a collection of 10 Canadian holidays, including the NEW 13-day Canada’s Wildlife and Wilderness, from £3,595pp. The exclusive departures are scheduled in June and September 2017.

The trip showcases the rugged beauty of Canada on a tour of the nation’s greatest natural features. One highlight of the holiday is a full-day excursion along the waterways of Tofino to spot black bears. Aboard a privately chartered boat, customers can enjoy watching the bears searching for food in their natural habitat. The cruise along the shorelines is a unique experience, giving the opportunity for wonderful photography and close encounters with a variety of wildlife such as eagles, seals and sea lions. Tofino, a small island in British Columbia – the province where Kate and Wills are spending most of their trip, including a bear-watching expedition of their own – is a popular destination for anyone looking to get close to nature.

This extraordinary itinerary also includes an orca-spotting cruise, a guided tour of Vancouver, and journeys on the iconic Canadian and Jasper-Prince Rupert trains. Natali Smith of VIA Rail said “This tour includes much of the very best Canada has to offer. The rail journey to Prince Rupert passes through some of the most beautiful landscape in the country”. She went on to say “the highlights must surely be black bear spotting and whale watching. The itinerary showcases why Canada delivers the ‘trip of a lifetime’”.

Head for the Mecca of Cider! Two nights in the Wye Valley from £90

If you are partial to a glass or two of fermented apple juice, then why not head for The Pilgrim Hotel in the Wye Valley, in Herefordshire, the Mecca of cider production, to indulge in a proper cider break! Over half of all cider sold in the UK comes from Herefordshire and there are plenty of cider-themed experiences to enjoy locally, including a ‘must visit’ trip to the Hereford Cider Museum.

The museum tells the fascinating story of how cider production grew in the area and, after the self-guided tour, you can visit the shop which stocks over 100 different bottled varieties, or enjoy a tipple or two in the restaurant. The museum’s website also has three downloadable ‘orchard walks’ from 3 to 5 miles in length, and all within a short drive of Hereford.  The maps also show where the nearest pubs are to the walks so that you can stop for a quick pint of cider!

Another option for visitors to the region is the Herefordshire Cider Route (leaflets available from the museum) which gives details of cider producers who have opened their doors to allow visitors to get a glimpse into the fascinating world of cider and perry production, and taste cider straight from the casks.

The leaflet also gives details on cider making workshops, which venues have cafes attached, and lists all the cider themed events and festivals that take place in the region throughout the year.

Naturally, many of the pubs in the area stock local cider and scrumpy, including the Yew Tree, just five minutes’ drive from the Pilgrim Hotel, which even has its own cider shop and sells crisps made using cider vinegar!

The Pilgrim Hotel’s own, country-pub-style-bar also stocks local ciders and ales, and traditional pub meals are also available.

Located at the rear of the hotel, the more formal Valley Restaurant has a wide choice of dishes, and diners can enjoy uninterrupted views over the Wales border towards the Black Mountains.

A two-night break in March costs from £90 per person (two sharing a room) on a B&B basis (some rooms also permit well-behaved dogs, £10 per night).

Tyddyn Llan Nominated for Top Restaurant Award

Bryan Webb, Head Chef and Proprietor of Michelin-starred Tyddyn Llan Restaurant with Rooms near Corwen in north Wales, has been shortlisted for Restaurant of the Year in the prestigious Great British Food Awards.

Other restaurants on the shortlist of 11 include Dinner (Heston Blumenthal), Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, Midsummer House (Daniel Clifford) and The Hand & Flowers (Tom Kerridge).

Comments Bryan Webb: “Of course it is flattering to be nominated and to be in such auspicious company.  But for me it has always just been about cooking good, unfussy food, using excellent ingredients – local wherever possible.

“The Michelin star was never coveted, but we were awarded it all the same, and have held it now for seven years; so at least our consistency is solid.  We are in a wonderful location, at the foot of the Berwyn Mountains and somewhat secluded.

“But, despite that, we have many regulars, some living locally, and others who travel from every corner of the UK to come and enjoy a short break with us in one of our comfortable rooms.  Let’s hope they all vote for us!”

In addition to its reputation for excellent cuisine, Tyddyn Llan is also renowned for its incredibly diverse wine list, which was rated ‘Wine List of the Year’ in the 2016 Good Food Guide.

In addition to the standard lunch and dinner menus, Bryan also offers a six course and nine course tasting menu (£75 and £90 respectively).

Current dishes include artichoke soup, dressed crab and langoustine with avocado, fennel and radish salad, parfait of foie gras and chicken livers, griddled scallops with cauliflower purée, pancetta, caper and raisin dressing, leek risotto with truffles, Label Anglais chicken and venison with goat’s cheese gnocchi and creamed swede, and hake with laverbread sauce.

Dessert choices include pannacotta with blood oranges and grappa, prune and almond tart, and chocolate cheesecake.

There is currently a special offer of an overnight stay which includes homemade shortbread and tea on arrival, the six-course tasting menu in the evening, and full breakfast the following morning.  The package costs from £115 per person (two sharing) with accommodation in a standard room.

Call 01490 440 264 (www.tyddynllan.co.uk).

Bryan’s latest book, Not Bad for a Taff, telling the story of his 40 years at the stove, with recipes from each decade, is available now from A Way With The Media (£25).

Your iPhone can stop working in the cold - here’s how to stop it from happening

Temperatures below 0ºC can cause your iPhone to malfunction

Phone recycling specialist Envirofone offers advice on how to prevent your phone breaking down in the freezing cold temperatures

As bitterly cold temperatures hit the UK, we’re well prepared for shivering, being able to see our breath and generally being uncomfortable. But did you know you could have a much bigger problem - your iPhone getting so cold it stops working?

When your phone gets too cold, the results range from mildly annoying to truly concerning. On one end of the scale your phone might not be able to detect your touch on the screen, on the other, the battery of your handset will deplete much faster, and if it gets really cold it will just turn off altogether. [1]

To shed some light on why this happens, phone recycling specialist Envirofone, has taken a look at the reasons why our iPhones seem to hate the cold as much as we do.

As it turns out, there is a technical reason behind the problem - the battery. All iPhones use a type of battery called Lithium-Ion, and while these battery types have their advantages they do not fare well in the cold.[2]

With Apple stating that the iPhones and other iOS devices operate most efficiently when the ambient temperature is between 0ºC and 35º C, the iPhone is actually designed to shut down automatically under certain conditions, such as extremely cold temperatures.[3]

So, now we know that the cold is a real problem for our phones and not just a figment of our imagination, what can we do to stop it happening?

Do your battery - and hands - a favour in the bitter cold and keep them in pockets, avoiding exposing them to the cold unless absolutely necessary. We know it might be tempting to check your phone to distract yourself from the freezing conditions, but if you want to keep your phone working, those texts and Facebook notifications will have to wait.

If you haven’t already, ensure your iPhone also has a case - we wouldn’t dream of going out in the cold without a coat afterall.

Richard Mavers, director of group marketing and online strategy at Envirofone, said: “People often speculate about whether or not the cold really does affect the iPhone’s battery. Now we know it does, it is important to avoid subjecting your iPhone to extremely cold conditions. Minimise the use of your phone outside when temperatures drop, and keep it warm in a pocket or bag where possible.”
