Heidi Fuller-love (HeidifullerlovesHotHotels.com) discovers stunning views and striking deco at one of London’s newest luxury hotels.

Situation is just one of the strong points of this swish new hotel with striking views over Finsbury square gardens. A short hop from some of the city’s major attractions, including St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Barbican arts complex, this luxury property is also a leisurely stroll from hip-and-trendy Shoreditch, famed for Indie boutiques and cool restaurants. If (like me) you enjoy using public transport, you’ll be glad to know that Liverpool street train station and Moorgate tube station are both five minutes walk away.

It was a hot day when I arrived (London in a heatwave!) so I was happy to cool off in the gleaming, soft-lit reception where I was handed an Oshibori and a refreshing iced drink. Check in was swift and professional, and the hotel’s friendly concierge gave me detailed tips on top things to do in the area.

A bottle of Prosecco and a well-stocked cheese plate awaited me in my eighth floor room. Sipping and snacking I enjoyed mesmerizing views  from the floor-to-ceiling window looking out over Finsbury square’s colourful mesh of tourists, dog walkers and joggers.  Interiors wizard Russell Sage (Zetter Townhouse; The Savoy Grill) designed the hotel’s 253 bedrooms and suites, so I wasn’t surprised to find a plump, comfortable bed, futuristic touch pad controls for air conditioning and ambient lighting, and even a personal smart phone for making (free) local and international calls. Other thoughtful touches include a Nespresso machine with complimentary pods, a pillow menu and luscious Elemis, and Hermes bathroom toiletries. (I was less keen on the machine that pumps perfume into the room - luckily you can turn it off).  Breakfast in the tenth floor Aviary restaurant is really worth getting up for: you can sit at a table (on the terrace when the weather is fine) and soak up spectacular views over the London skyline as you savour a hearty English breakfast, or healthier options, including yoghurt fruit, honey and nuts.

For coffee or a snack, Burdock, the hotel’s casual dining venue on the first floor is fine, but if you want to dine in style, Aviary’s a la carte menu offers plenty of what Britain does best (only with a modern twist): delicious dressed Dorset crab; slabs of cottage pie and juicy home-grown steaks.

There’s also an Executive Lounge serving drinks and snacks, as well as alcoholic beverages later in the day.

And just in case you need more reasons to linger, this brand new hotel has a bijou spa with sauna, steam room and an elegant heated pool. Maybe it’s time to book your next London city break?
