Home to a rich and diverse history, Cancun, Mexico is situated in the former heartland of the Mayan culture. The Mayan people excelled at agriculture, pottery, hieroglyph writing and mathematics. They left behind impressive architecture and symbolic artwork and numerous scholars have questioned what may have caused the dramatic decline of these people.
Cancun marks many Mayan ruins where you can step back in time by visiting the cliff-top city of Tulum. Here you will find the Temple of Frescoes and mesmerising pyramids. Cancun gives you the chance to do as much or as little as you want. For those 24 hour party people there’s an abundance of bars, restaurants and clubs but if you just want a relaxing family break you will find that too.
A Place to Stay
Put down your iPhone, forget the conference calls and take your family to the picturesque Playa Mujeres, home to the all-inclusive, luxurious, family-friendly Finest resort. Coupled with its crystal azures waters and long stretches of white, sweeping, private sandy beaches, this resort seeks to accommodate couples and inject fun into family holidays. The chic and contemporary resort welcomes you with a cool towel and a chilled glass of champagne before you make your way to your room.
Room with a view
The large, well-appointed room with a fresh rose on the bed (nice touch, I thought) is decorated in creams and walnut hues with marble flooring, Jacuzzis bath and luxury toiletries. It has a sizeable sitting area, complementary mini-bar with touch screen technology to welcome the modern traveller. I walked onto my furnished balcony to have breakfast and take in the view of the well-groomed gardens which was a wonderful sight.
Things to see and do
The resort includes 10 swimming pools including children’s’ and baby wading pools, a complementary programme to keep your kids entertained and a pavilion to keep the teens occupied – after all, it’s their holiday as well! For the adults, there’s a daily events programme including dance lessons by the pool, cookery and keep fit classes as well as many excursions for all the family. I enjoyed the evening entertainment which saw me taking in a diverse programme of colourful and varied performers. The next day I decided to take a cab to downtown Cancun where the sounds of salsa and jazz oozed from the clubs, shop doorways and parked cars. I headed to the vibrant markets, engaging with the friendly and informative sellers while I purchased gifts.
After a day’s shopping I decided the next day I’d enjoy some time relaxing on the beach where I was refreshed by a tall Tequila cocktail (after all, I was in Mexico!) while tapping my hands to the beach hut band. An array of salsa and reggae music accompanied the sun’s rays which warmed my brow as the palm trees swayed in the gentle breeze. After sunbathing I made my way to my room to dress for dinner. Nine international gourmet restaurants and a coffee shop cafe ensure that it’s a pleasing culinary experience for even the most demanding of guests. I enjoyed dining at Insieme Trattoria restaurant with its outdoor terrace. Here I took delight in tasting the homemade pasta and wood-oven specialities while taking in the picture-perfect sunset.
The Spa Appeal
The One Spa utilises therapies from different parts of the world to enrich the customer’s experience. I had the Des Huiles Essentielles Facial, a treatment which incorporates breathing, cleansing and nourishing with a massage that stimulates the lymph for internal detoxification. My therapist, Socorro Estrada, concluded the treatment with a revitalising holistic ritual. I was left with a soft, silky complexion, my mind clear and focused.
The WOW Factor
This is a modern, striking and beautiful place with impeccable service from staff that ensures you and your family will have a stunning break in a stylish and refined resort.
