Heidi Fuller-love visits the Galaxy Hotel, Heraklion, Crete Greece.

Expect slick service with a smile in this stylish, modern sleepery close to the Cretan capitals’ main sights, which has a large freshwater pool, two restaurants and a compact spa.

Seamlessly modern with squeaky clean fixtures-and-fittings, this recently refurbished Cretan bolthole a leisurely stroll from Heraklions’ labyrinth-like complex of shop studded lanes is also close to the city’s Venetian-fort-framed harbour.

Set on four levels, spacious pool- or street-view rooms are divided into five categories, including Superior Business rooms with ample desk space and high-speed internet, Executive suites with Jacuzzi bathtubs and separate sitting area, and (apparently a European first) Pure Allergy rooms whose features include hypoallergenic bedding and a dedicated air purification system.

A healthful breakfast buffet is served in the Vetri restaurant overlooking the pool, or out on the pool terrace – there are piles of Cretan pastries and ladles of creamy Greek yoghurt, but also cereals, fresh juices and cooked options. Dinner in the cosier Per Se restaurant is Greek fusion, which translates as Cretan mithizra cheese soufflés, Greek salad with feta cheese mousse and other sapid twists on classic dishes.

With an 18 hole golf course, famous archaeological sites (including the Minoan Palace of Knossos) and a string of unspoilt beaches all within easy reach, you could easily spend a week in this well-situated Cretan property.
